Water. It’s probably one of the most underrated nutrients out there. We all know we should be drinking water, but not everyone realizes just how much we benefit from it (especially when drinking water for weight loss).

Have a headache? That may be because you’re not drinking enough water daily. Feeling sluggish? You need water. Breaking out? Water. Trouble losing weight? Try drinking water for weight loss.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that water solves ALL of our problems. However, it could be the solution to some of your problems.

I used to suffer from constant headaches. I would wake up with a headache probably four out of seven days a week and had to carry painkillers with me wherever I went. Guess how much water I was drinking at that time? Barely any. Honestly, I could go through the whole day without even drinking one full glass of water because I never felt dehydrated. I thought my body just doesn’t need that much water because if it did I would feel dehydrated and thirsty.

I was VERY VERY wrong.

From banishing headaches to flushing out toxins to improving your complexion to relieving fatigue to promoting weight loss – water can really work miracles. Plus, replacing sugary drinks with water can help you cut out some unnecessary calories too.

Basically, what I’m trying to get to here is that drinking water for weight loss is very important.

Now, I guess you’re wondering about daily water consumption and how much water should you be drinking exactly…

How much water to lose weight?

I’m sure you’ve heard that you’re supposed to drink 8 glasses of water or about 65 ounces of water a day. But, actually, the amount of daily water you need depends on your weight and activity level.

You can determine how much water you should be drinking for proper hydration with this daily water intake calculator below.

Now that you know how much water your body needs, let’s talk a little bit about drinking water for weight loss.

How drinking water helps lose weight:

1. Cuts calories

Did you know that one 12-oz can of coca cola has about 39 grams of sugar?! That’s over 100 calories (140 calories to be exact) in one drink that you can chug down in less than 5 minutes. So what would happen if you were to replace that daily can of coca cola with water? Let’s do the math. Cutting just one can of soda per day saves up to 51100 calories per year – that’s about 14.6 pounds per year! Which is over 1 pound per month by simply replacing soda with water.

Plus, you can always add a little taste to your water by infusing it with mint, lemon, cucumber or fruits.

2. Reduces appetite

Yeah, this one is an old trick in the book, but it’s an effective one. Drinking a glass of water before meals can make you feel more full, resulting in consuming fewer calories. It’s as easy as that – and it’s been proven in numerous studies.

Plus, I was surprised to learn that sometimes signs of hunger could actually be signs of dehydration. It’s a way of our bodies telling us to drink water. So, next time you’re feeling hungry, try to drink water before reaching for that snack – you may not need it all.

3. Improves your workouts

Staying hydrated can help you work longer and harder at your gym session, resulting in a higher calorie burn. Not to mention, your heart pumps blood to your muscles more efficiently when you’re hydrated.

This is why you may see people weighing themselves before and after their workouts. They’re checking to see if they drank enough water throughout their workout. If you weigh less after your workout than you did before – it’s not because you burned calories, it’s because you burned WATER and you’re dehydrated. So don’t forget that water bottle when you’re heading to the gym!

4. Improves your metabolism

Ever heard of a negative-calorie food? When your body needs more energy (calories) to digest a food than the food provides, it’s considered a negative-calorie food.

Water is a negative calorie food. But don’t look to this method for weight loss, as you’d have to consume a dangerous amount of H2O.

Does drinking water burn calories?

Water can boost your body’s ability to burn fat (if you’re already taking other measures to lose weight). Studies have proven that drinking water can boost your metabolic rate by up to 30% in healthy men and women – the effect lasts for 30 – 40 mins.

It’s also said that ice water burns extra calories, as your body has to heat it up before using it. Not all experts agree on this theory, but, hey, it doesn’t hurt to throw in some ice. Who knows, maybe it really does work!

Bottom line – whether it’s ice cold or room temperature, drinking water for weight loss can really help you in your journey and your health in general!

So make sure you’re meeting your daily water intake goals and don’t forget how important drinking water for weight loss is!

If you have trouble meeting your water goal like I did, I recommend carrying a water bottle with you wherever you go. The one I use has a counting dot that helps keep track of how much water I have had throughout the day. I found it on Amazon.

But if simply carrying a water bottle with you doesn’t do the trick, then you could look into investing in a hydration tracker that connects to your phone and reminds you to drink water throughout the day via app. It is on the pricey side though, so I would give a simpler water bottle a shot first!

Stay hydrated and don’t forget to be drinking water for weight loss! 🙂

But if you’re really serious about losing weight, wait till you hear this…

  • Have you tried just about every diet out there yet nothing seems to work?
  • Do you feel like maybe you’re just not meant to be lean?

Guess what – it’s not your body or your genetics that are stopping you…it’s your MINDSET.
