The word “fasting” doesn’t exactly scream “healthy” for most people. Fasting will most probably be associated with religion or even starvation. Of course, starvation is not good and it is not what I will be talking about in this article.

This type of fasting can help you lose weight the right and healthy way. But, of course, you need to do it right and follow a strict plan in order for it to work properly and be healthy for you.

And since intermittent fasting is an eating pattern, it is important to also eat healthy for the best results!

What is intermittent fasting?

Intermittent fasting does not regulate the food you will eat. It’s not a diet plan, it’s an eating pattern that determines consecutive eating and fasting time frames.

1.Eat-Stop-Eat

Once or twice a week, you fast for 24 hours. You might have dinner on Tuesday and then not eat until the same time on Wednesday. After that, you just follow your regular diet.

But keep in mind, if you fast twice a week, the days need to be apart, not consecutive! And this fasting method can bring some seriously great results!

However, this intermittent fasting method may be difficult to stick to if you’re new to weight loss. So don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t work out for you. Just try out another method, there are so many!

2.The 5:2 fast diet

This diet is great for those who find it hard to stick to a certain meal plan every day.

What you do is you eat what you usually would 5 days a week and then the other 2 days you only eat about 500-600 calories. But just like the eat-stop-eat diet, the two fasting days shouldn’t be consecutive.

This method is an easier to follow alternative to the eat-stop-eat diet.

3.The 16:8 diet

The numbers here refer to hours during the day. You fast for 16 hours a day and then eat during the other 8.

I know, 16 hours sound like a lot! But if you add your sleeping hours to them it really isn’t that much. For example, you can have dinner at 6 PM and not eat anything else until 10 AM the next day.

But you can choose your eating window yourself depending on your preferred dinner or breakfast time or your schedule!

How does intermittent fasting help with weight loss?

1.Intermittent fasting helps your body adapt to eating fewer calories

The most common reason people become overweight is eating too much. And intermittent fasting can help solve this problem.

Of course, at first, you will feel very hungry while fasting. But with time your body will adapt to the fewer calories you eat by reducing the ghrelin (hunger hormone) in your body. And then you won’t have so many cravings and it will be easier to not overeat.

2.It increases your HGH (human growth hormone) levels

HGH helps store glycogen and produce muscle. So when HGH increases when you fast, its priority is to protect the muscle and glycogen. The hormone does this by using your stored fat for energy.

Normally, the human body uses energy from the carbs you eat. So fasting can seriously increase the pace of your weight loss!

3.It lowers your insulin levels

Insulin is a hormone that helps put glucose into cells. Insulin increases when we eat, especially when eating carbs. But when we fast, there is a stark drop of this hormone.

This means that glucose will not be stored in cells so rapidly because you just won’t consume much glucose. And this will increase fat burning. This is because your body will use your stored body fat for energy rather than using energy from the food you consume.

If fasting still doesn’t sound like a healthy weight loss solution to you, think about this:  years ago there were no supermarkets or restaurants and you couldn’t just eat whenever you wanted, as it is today.

Sometimes our ancestors had to go for days without any food. And in order for them to survive, their bodies adapted to possible unexpected food shortages and kept functioning properly despite the hunger.

Fasting is natural to us, so we should definitely use the benefits it has, especially when losing weight.

One important thing I would like to point out is that you should also follow a diet plan. Some intermittent fasting methods don’t necessarily require a strict diet plan. But if you want to lose weight as effectively as possible, I definitely suggest following one! Because if you join both intermittent fasting and a diet, you can reach amazing results!

But remember, intermittent fasting does require lots of will and patience. It could be very hard to go for so many hours without eating anything. So if this is the case for you, don’t worry! Just try taking it slow. Increase your fasting hours day by day until you reach your desired goal!
