How I Lost 80 Pounds

How I Lost Weight: A Success Story

Ok, let’s jump into a time machine and go back to the year of 2012. It’s Saturday, 2 pm in the morning (yes, 2 pm was morning for me), I wake up with a terrible headache after partying last night and the one and only thing I have in mind is – food.

I call my friends and 20 minutes or 30 minutes later we are heading to a pizza place. And what’s a pizza without a beer? Next, comes Sunday morning and the story is basically the same. Except this time we’re heading to a Chinese restaurant. And what’s Chinese food without a beer? As always, after a great weekend comes to an end, Monday knocks on the door…

And we all know Monday is just the happiest and most awaited day of the week, right?! I’m sitting at my desk in the office and constantly looking up at the clock… Guess what I’m waiting for? That’s right – LUNCH TIME!

And when it finally comes, I’m heading to a pizza place or any other fast food restaurant (sadly I can’t have a beer while I’m working).

So, basically, my whole week would look like this – from Monday to Friday I’m waiting for the weekend and from Friday to Sunday I’m partying and EATING (even when I feel full).

So, I think it’s safe to say I was consuming way too many calories…

Every day I felt like crap (at that time, I didn’t really realize that I could feel better, it was a normal feeling for me). Guess how I looked after ~3 years of this kind of lifestyle?

Well, let me put it this way – I used to weight ~254 pounds (115 kg) and I looked like Shrek (that green dude who married Princess Fiona of Far Far Away).

Now, I’m sure you’re wondering how I lost weight exactly…

It all started, when one day, I looked in the mirror and thought  – how will I look after one year if I don’t change anything?

This is when my journey started. It started only in my mind, but at least it started.

For about two months straight, every day I would think about the fact that I need to change, that I need to do something. All I knew was that I need to workout to lose fat.

I didn’t know anything about nutrition, exercise, heart rates and etc. So, for about two months, all I was doing  was dreaming about losing weight yet not doing anything about it.

Now this is where my real story of how I lost weight begins…

The big change…

Then, one morning I woke up and felt like I was really ready. Ready for a lifestyle change.

I jumped into my car, drove to the nearest gym and was going to buy myself a monthly membership… And guess what?!

The gym was about to close down because the building was sold to a real estate company, which was planning on building new apartments. At that moment, I was really confused – all of my plans had collapsed. But I didn’t give up just yet.

I got back into my car and googled other gyms (there weren’t many gyms in my neighborhood). The second gym I drove to was closed due to repairs. I felt like it wasn’t meant to be…

But I didn’t give up just yet and drove to a third gym, and… The third time’s a charm! I bought myself a monthly membership and went to the changing room.

It was very weird. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know how to act. In fact, I realized that I didn’t know anything! My first workout was terrible, but it was a workout. It was a really huge step for me and for my journey on how I lost weight.

After the workout, I came back home and started to read about fitness. Then, I started practically applying all of the information that I had read. I tried low-intensity training, HIIT, sprints, group exercises, strength training, swimming. Basically, I tried EVERYTHING that I managed to find on the internet and made tons of mistakes, but I kept going and learning.

After a month of working out regularly, I quit smoking (special thanks to Allen Carr – the author of the book “Easy way to quit smoking”). And it had a huge impact on how I felt, how I feel now, and my results!

After one more month, I started meal prepping and eating only what I had planned to eat (no cheating!).

I tried a bunch of diets – keto diet, low-carb diet, intermitted fasting, I even starved myself (you shouldn’t do this).

After two more months, I started reading more into nutrition, counting calories, exercising, weight gain, fat loss, motivation and just kept on trying. After about 6 months of working out, I had lost 30 pounds.

During New Year’s Eve, my friend and I made a deal that we wouldn’t drink alcohol for the next 6 months (and yes…. I was very drunk at the moment).

So, I said bye bye to my hangovers for 6 months. In my wildest dreams, I would have never thought that this would actually happen, but I liked it. So, I quit smoking and I quit drinking – what should I do now? Train harder and eat cleaner!

I worked out 4-6 times a week and had a strict meal plan. After the first year of my lifestyle change, I had run about 1000 miles (~1600 km) and had about 220 strength training sessions.

And there you have it, my success story of how I lost weight!

The results

In 18 months I had lost a lot of weight (80 pounds (~40kg) to be exact). I went from 254 pounds (~115kg) to 174 (~79kg) and I learned a lot!

Now I can proudly say that I’m living a totally different life and I’m very happy with this decision that I made a few years ago.

I have a different view on alcohol, I drink only on rare occasions (2-6 times a year), I train 4-5 times a week, I don’t have hangovers every weekend and I’m not ashamed to take my shirt off.

The biggest lesson I have learned from my journey – if you really want it – you can achieve anything! There is only one condition – you must DO it!

After all this, I made a decision to take fitness courses and start a career as a personal trainer. Now I’m a certified fitness professional, constant visitor of various fitness seminars, and most importantly – I help people lose weight and keep it off!

This is my long story – short. What I wanted to to tell with this story is that everything is possible! You just need to put your mind to it. If I managed to lose 80 pounds and go from a smoker, drinker, and constant party attender to a personal trainer – SO CAN YOU!

I really hope my story of how I lost weight inspired some of you.

However, how I lost weight was not the fastest route. Whether it’s 10 pounds, 50 pounds or 100 pounds you want to lose – you can do it! And you can do it much faster than I did…
