Yoga For Beginners: How To Get Started!

Starting out with something new can be very difficult. When I first started out with yoga, I knew absolutely nothing about it. I didn’t know if yoga really was for me and I didn’t know anything about where to start with it.

The truth is, I started doing yoga because I was just looking for the perfect low-intensity workout since I didn’t really enjoy intense jogs and workouts. And yoga was the perfect alternative!

But yoga is far from an easier and less effective workout than jogging. It can be pretty difficult but rather than focusing mostly on your strength and endurance like many workouts do, it focuses on your breathing, your mind, and your body. And it does require a lot of practice to master certain moves and techniques.

What makes yoga stand out from other workouts is that it focuses not only on your body but on your mind and emotions. There really are endless benefits, and definitely not less than jogging has! But more on that later!

If you’re interested in starting out with yoga but don’t know where to start, keep on reading! In this article, I will try to answer all your questions about yoga for beginners and hopefully, you will be more confident in starting yoga after you read it!

Who can do yoga?

The true beauty of yoga is that ANYBODY can do it no matter your age, weight, or height! In some cases, certain health problems can keep you from doing certain yoga poses or techniques but still, you will most likely be able to do the basics!

There are many different levels of yoga. Some poses are very simple, some are harder, and some are super advanced which only advanced yogis can do. But no matter what, anybody can start off with some basic yoga poses and move their way up to the more advanced ones!

What do I need for my yoga sessions?

The main thing you will need is a mat. There are other yoga props such as blocks, bolsters, and straps. But usually, you can do yoga without them or just use something else as an alternative.

Another very important thing for yoga is comfortable clothing. Many people imagine yoga can only be done in yoga pants or a sports bra. But some people don’t really feel comfortable in them. So just wear whatever feels good to you and what you feel confident and free in!

Why should I start doing yoga?

So many people around the world do yoga. But WHY do they do it? How can yoga be so beneficial that it’s so popular around the world? Well, yoga really has countless benefits to your mind and body! To name some of the most noticeable ones:

Yoga for weight loss?

That’s right! Yoga CAN absolutely help you lose weight! I know, you may be thinking: but isn’t yoga a low-intensity workout? Don’t you need high-intensity like jogging for weight loss?

Well, many people assume that you need to jog for weight loss. But there are so many different possibilities for weight loss workouts and the now I’ve found to work best for me is yoga! Let me explain in more detail how yoga actually helps you lose weight.

First of all, it helps you physically by burning calories, helping you sleep better, and boosting your metabolism. But yoga also helps you PSYCHOLOGICALLY with weight loss. It reduces stress and cravings and makes you happier!

That’s why yoga, to me, is the best workout for weight loss. While other exercises focus only on your outside, yoga heals you from within, too!

Where can I learn yoga?

These days, there really are a lot of possibilities for learning yoga. The most obvious and most popular way is going to a yoga class. But I completely understand if you don’t want to go to a class. Maybe you don’t feel comfortable being in between more advanced, flexible yogis when you’re just a beginner.

I know when I first started out with yoga, I went to a class and never came back because I felt like I didn’t belong there as I knew nothing about yoga.

And I understand if you feel insecure about your body and are afraid of weird looks at the gym. But this is no reason to not do yoga at all! There are many alternatives to going to a yoga class.

Probably the most convenient way of learning yoga for beginners is with an online class from the comfort of your own home!
